Milk teeth get the gold treatment

Gold tooth 'grills' are becoming increasingly popular among children in the US, according to some trend-spotters.

One dentist told the Contra Costa Times that most grill wearers are between 15- and 25-years-old, although he had fitted a single cap for a child as young as three, with many younger children getting in on the trend.

Grills are essentially metal – usually gold but sometimes platinum - dentures that fit over the wearer's front teeth. They are individually crafted so a mould must first be taken of the wearer's mouth.

Grills can either be fitted on an individual tooth or over an entire row for a more ostentatious look. They cost between $150 and $250 each, although become more costly as diamonds and other pieces of extra 'bling' are added.

Although popular since the 1990s, grills were originally fairly unique to the southern states of the US. They have since been spotted in mouths further north, although it remains to be seen how well they will travel across the Atlantic.
