US jeweller throws anniversary auctionMonday, 30th January 2006 (4531 views) A US jeweller will mark its 50th year in business by auctioning off four suites of jewellery for charity.Roper's Jewellers celebrates its golden anniversary on February 12th at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn, the Auburn Journal reports. But in an effort to give something back to the community that has kept its tills ringing since 1956, the jeweller will itself be the one dishing out the presents on its big day. Each of the four jewellery suites it's putting together have a value of between $5,000 and $6,000. All four lots will go under the hammer at the celebratory event and the money will then be handed to four non-profit groups. "The community has been very good to us and we wanted to show our appreciation," said Harvey Roper, the store's owner. "We thought of this as the best way to show that appreciation." Roper's has 19 staff and offers an array of services including custom jewellery design. It opened a second store in North Auburn in 1990.
