The new Vertu Signature 2006 is a luxurious mobile phone that is available in gold.

Engineered to the finest standards, the Vertu is billed as being as much a work of art as a communication device.

As well as the yellow or white gold versions, affluent telephonists also have the option of buying the Vertu in platinum or even encrusted with diamonds.

Prices range from $6,000 for a steel model to $60,000 for a platinum Vertu with a solitaire diamond.

The phones are surrounded with a durable leather grip, to ensure they don't slip from one's hand mid-conversation.

Vertu users will also have access to the worldwide Vertu Concierge service, which provides users with expert information on travel and entertainment at the push of a dedicated key, located on the phone's flank.

The 2006 model features various upgrades on the original, including a colour screen and an internal antenna.

Vertu is not the only company that is using gold to add colour to its products.

Audio-visual vendor LG has created a gold version of its 71-inch high definition plasma display panel (PDP) television, the MW-71PY10, which carries a price tag of $75,000.
