A Chinese costume designer has used dresses decorated with gold to capture attention at a wedding exhibition in Shanghai.

Tsai Meiyue displayed two wedding gowns decorated with gold and jade at the International Wedding Photographic Equipment Exhibition in order to appeal to a more affluent clientele willing to splash out more on wedding attire.

"China's high-end wedding market has just taken off," she told the Shanghai Daily.

Tsai began business in Xiamen 15 years ago and now runs Rose Tsai International Wedding Dresses, as well as being chairman of the Chinese Wedding Gown Photographic Equipment Association.

"We plan to open two retail stores in Shanghai and Beijing this year as we see that more customers are willing to pay for high-end wedding dresses," she said. The gowns she put on display are worth $12,422.

Other companies have realised the benefits of using gold to sell products. The new Vertu high-end mobile phone is available in white or yellow gold, and audio visual technology firm LG recently released a $75,000 gold television.
