Fabergé has created 50 eggs containing gold figurines of past Conservative party leaders in a bid to raise £250,000 for the British political party.

Its With Pride and Passion eggs are being sold for £10,000 each and half the proceeds will go to the Tories – who have been out of power since 1997.

Building on its history of supplying gold and silver eggs for Russian tsars, Fabergé has injected the Midas touch into each of the limited edition eggs.

Inside each creation, buyers will find a figurine of either Robert Peel, Benjamin Disraeli, Winston Churchill or Margaret Thatcher, crafted out of the noble metal.

Gold and silver were also used to construct eight accompanying miniature eggs celebrating famous dates in the party's history and the trademark 'swags' at the base of the egg.

The eggs' shells are made from sterling silver and are enamelled in cobalt blue.

The gold-decked eggs were unveiled last week at London's Carlton Club, the Times reports.

Two were sold on the day and the manufacturers will try to flog the remaining 48 when they make a tour of 30 Tory constituencies.
