Gold souk is Dubai's treasure trove

Monday, 27th February 2006 (4898 views)

Visiting the gold souk is one of the ten best ways to pass the time during a stopover in Dubai, according to the Times.

The gold souk, or gold market, is a truly wondrous sight to behold, and has earned Dubai a reputation for being the 'City of Gold'. The market offers earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets and pendants, many of them available in different gold hues.

Local craftsmen create gold alloys to produce jewellery in pink, white, yellow and green, as well as in traditional yellow gold. Prices are hard to beat, and can be reduced further with a bit of bargaining.

The seven-star Burj Al Arab hotel, with its striking design modelled after a billowing sail, also features in the list.

The Burj Al Arab hotel is a blend of classy design and jawdropping garishness. Gold mosaic floors and million-dollar fountains add to the ostentation of the interior.

Each floor has its own private reception desk, as well as a troupe of first-class butlers to cater to the affluent traveller's every whim.

A night at the Burj Al Arab costs from £1,200.
