Fashionistas the world over are excited about the prospect of gold, gold and more gold this season, as trends point to another season where jewellery heads in the bling direction.

Melissa Payner, chief executive of Bluefly.com, an online shopping site, says it’s all about mixing bright metals, lots of gold and natural elements.

Her tip? "Opt for silver or gold chains that can be layered to create volume."

Gold hoop earrings are also back on the fashion radar, and once again, the bigger the better.

The news comes at a time when gold jewellery continues to increase in popularity, with many loved-up celebrities opting for wedding rings made of the metal.

Even Jessica Simpson still wears hers around her neck on a gold chain following her split from husband Nick Lachey.
