Monday, 22nd May 2006 (4004 views) Treasure hunters in the Isle of Wight have stumbled across a striking medieval gold brooch.Archaeologists based on the island have lauded the find of Allan Hull, who discovered the gold amulet in Godshill, reports the Isle of Wight County Press. The brooch, said to date back to the 13th century, has an inscription to God inside it, which is believed to have been a charm designed to ward off sickness in the early Middle Ages. Mr Hall, a keen metal detector, said he had found the brooch with the help of a friend. "I have a friend, Rob, and we are always joking who is the best metal detector. Every time he comes over to talk to me, he finds some good coins," he explained. "On this particular day he was coming towards me and he was dragging his spade in the soil making a furrow." "When he walked off I trained my detector on the furrow he had made and found this amazing brooch," he added. This year has already seen the local metal detecting club find a gold coin dating back to James I as well as Roman artefacts.
