India has confirmed a "public sector undertaking" has begin to explore for gold in Tanzania.

In a statement issued by the minister of state for mines, Dr T. Subbarami Reddy, the government confirmed surveying and geological mapping would be undertaken.

The National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) has been charged with the work, which will also include drilling and trench excavation as part of the initial exploration.

"Further exploration work has been planned in promising blocks," the statement read.

NMDC has two prospecting licences in the region, in the Bulyand Ombe-I and Siga Hills areas of the country.

There is no formal agreement with the government of Tanzania, although the exploration is set to continue.
