Taseko mine to create hundreds of jobsThursday, 22nd June 2006 (3010 views) Taseko Mines is hoping to complete a copper/gold mine in Canada by 2010 that will create hundreds of new jobs. The Prosperity Project in British Columbia will have an initial lifetime of 22 years and will be twice as big as Gibraltar Mine, which employs 274 people directly, the Williams Lake Tribune reports. If the project goes ahead without glitches, the mine could be up and running within four years. "We hope to build a new mine in the region that involves $800 million in capital investment and will create 550 direct jobs and 1,280 indirect jobs," said Scott Jones, general manager of the project. He added that public consultations would play a key role in the mine's environmental assessment. "We're not just looking at the physical environment, we're looking at the social and socioeconomic aspect as well," he said. "We want to include the traditional use knowledge of the land into the scientific model." Prosperity is the largest undeveloped copper/gold deposit in Canada. The site has an estimated reserve of 9.2 million ounces.
