A gold-linked bracelet given to Clark Gable by his future wife and fellow actress Carole Lombard has been sold at a celebrity auction in New York for $7,800.

Engraved with the message 'I Love You CL' the bracelet also bore the late Gone with the Wind actor's initials on the clasp.

Fetching the highest prices at the Christie's auction of celebrity possessions were those once belonging to Marilyn Monroe, including a black cocktail dress and a full-length white ermine coat both. The former, worn by Monroe while filming the Misfits, fetched $66,000 and the latter $50,400.

An address book belonging to the late actress from the early 1960s reached double its estimate at $31,200. The book contained numbers for her personal physician, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst.

Other quirky items at the sale included one of American artist Andy Warhol's wigs from the 1980s, which sold for $10,800.

A Polaroid photograph of boxer Muhammad Ali complete with artist's signature, fetched $19,200 and a similar 1975 Polaroid of Rolling Stone's frontman Mick Jagger managed £15,600.
