Canadian company Glass Earth is digging for gold in New Zealand and is hoping that success could lead to a plethora of jobs.

The company makes use of cutting edge technology to "see" into the earth and has now conducted an aerial survey of a geothermal region between Rotorua and Taupo on New Zealand's north island.

If the company strikes gold, the resulting underground or open cast mine could bring hundreds of jobs to the region, boosting the local economy.

Glass Earth's Simon Henderson told Stuff.co.nz that in five to ten years the workforce could comprise machine drivers, field operators, mechanics and environmentalists, as well as geologists. However, he conceded that finding mineable gold was by no means a given.

Glass Earth's research and development projects include developing a prototype rapid core logger that makes use of satellite-based mineral mapping technologies.

The company is also working on FracSIS, a database for complex fractal data sets and their visualisation.
