The northwestern US city of Seattle has opened a new National Historical Park in Seattle's Pioneer Square to commemorate and illustrate the 1897 Klondike Gold Rush.

The free exhibit opened yesterday (Monday, 26 June) following a grand opening ceremony conducted by city mayor Greg Nickels, in association with members of the Canadian consulate and a division of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Costing around $1.2 million, the new exhibition replaces the former gold rush park found on Seattle's Main Street for a quarter of a century.

It features several interactive exhibits demonstrating what life was like for the gold rush pioneers and also has profiles of typical 'stampeders', showing what they hoped to gain, why they were there and what drove them in their quest.

The 'park' is also notable for its size as well as historical context and importance to the local community.

Built on the site of the old Cadillac Hotel that was destroyed by an earthquake, it is one of the smallest national parks in the nation.
