Extensive drill work has revealed indications of three new zones at the Hwini-Butre and Benso projects in Ghana, Golden Star Resources has revealed.

South of the company's Wassa mine, known mineralisation areas were also extended along strike.

In addition to this, metallurgical and geotechnical samples were gathered for assessment as part of the ongoing feasibility study.

Vice president of exploration Dr Doug Jones said: "At the time of acquisition, St Jude Resources Ltd had reported that Hwini-Butre and Benso had total near surface attributable indicated mineral resources of approximately 5.3 million tonnes at an average grade of 4.5 grams of gold per tonne for about 0.77 million ounces of contained gold.

"Results obtained to date have been highly encouraging and indicate that excellent potential exists to expand the resource. In addition, data from geochemical surveys carried out previously have been reviewed and the geochemical coverage has been extended to new areas believed to have geological potential for repetitions of the known mineralised structures."

He added that upon the completion of the feasibility study, expected by the end of the year, some of the resources will be converted into reserves.
