The latest in a spate of gold medal thefts in recent weeks has continued, as Australian Olympic hockey gold medallist Katrina Powell has had her collection of medals stolen.

A safe containing her two gold medals, as well as numerous other prizes, was taken from Ms Powell's Perth home. The theft was discovered on Tuesday evening when she returned from work.

The latest crime follows a similar incident last week when fellow Australian Olympian Tatiana Grigorieva had the silver she won at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 stolen in Brisbane, along with several other prizes she kept in a secure safe at a friend's business.

A few weeks ago, British rower James Cracknell also reported his two gold medals had been taken from his home.

On that occasion, police were able to track down the thief and his medals were recovered and Ms Powell and Ms Grigorieva will be hoping for similar outcomes.

Both women would receive replacement medals from the International Olympic Committee, which has a policy to replace any medals that are stolen or destroyed if the originals are not recovered.
