Tuesday, 22nd August 2006 (3873 views) NovaGold Resources' new Rock Creek gold mine will provide economic benefits for the surrounding area in Nome, Alaska, including many full-time jobs.The company announced that it has received permission to go ahead with construction at the site and production of gold is expected to begin within nine months. In a statement, NovaGold spelled out the benefits that the mine would bring: "Rock Creek will have minimal environmental impact and provide significant economic benefits to the local community, including the creation of 135 full-time jobs." When it begins producing the precious metal, it will be the first of NovaGold's projects to do so. The news of its construction was welcomed by the governor of Alaska, Frank Murkowski, who said: "Here is a great example of how this administration has worked with industry to permit projects that will employ Alaskans. "I am very happy that we have been able to issue the permits for this project and look forward to pouring first gold in about a year." NovaGold president and chief executive Rick Van Nieuwenhuyse added: "NovaGold is committed to building a showcase mine that will operate with the utmost respect for the environment and the community of Nome."
