Large gold deposit uncovered in BulgariaTuesday, 22nd August 2006 (2411 views) According to a report by Bulgarian newspaper Novinar, a deposit of around 950 tonnes of gold has been discovered by scientists in eastern Europe. The find, located by a team of professionals led by Emil Minev from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, is in the Pernik region of Bulgaria and represents a significant discovery for the country. With EU membership close to being finalised, Bulgaria's role in European affairs could be changed with the addition of substantial gold deposits within its borders. Analysts believe that with the new technology that can be offered by fellow EU member nations, Bulgaria will be in an excellent position to manipulate its as-yet untapped gold reserves. Additional opportunities to mine the precious metal have also been discovered by Canadian mining and exploration firm Martern, which has undertaken research work at a variety of sites in and around the village of Popintsi in the Panagiurishte region of Bulgaria.
