Bob Marley goes goldThursday, 24th August 2006 (2372 views) Although music buffs will be used to hearing that Bob Marley has gone gold or platinum, this year will see a very different example of just that. The Associated Press reports that the Bank of Jamaica, the home country of legendary reggae star Bob Marley, has minted a series of gold and silver coins in memory of one of the Caribbean nation's most famous exports. The collection has been produced to commemorate the musician's 60th birthday, although in typical laid-back tropical fashion, Marley would actually have been 61 by now. Born on February 6th 1945, Bob Marley and his band, the Wailers, became one of modern music's most iconic outfits through such worldwide hits as "I Shot the Sheriff", "No Woman No Cry", "Redemption Song", and "Could You Be Loved". Marley helped to popularise the reggae music genre and the Rastafarian culture, which, until Marley and his band ambled onto the music scene, were popularly recognised as solely Caribbean loves. The gold and silver coins have reportedly "totally sold out" according to a bank spokesperson. A similar set were produced for Marley's 50th birthday as well.
