Ancient artefacts on display in Peru

Thursday, 24th August 2006 (2379 views)

The Central Reserve Bank of Peru has hosted an exhibition of artefacts from the ancient cultures of Lambayeque-Chimu and Nasca this week.

The artefacts, which include gold urns, bowls, chalices and funeral masks, are all considered valuable national relics that display the affluent heritage of ancient Peruvian civilizations.

Dating back to the seventh century and discovered in the early 20th century by an archaeologist called Hugo Cohen, the collection was on display in the capital Lima and officials said they hoped it would help to bring in tourism to the city.

"They were made for gods, for worship and I think this inspires respect. It is the value of tradition that we are rescuing," said Cecilia Bakula, the National Cultural Institute Director, who said it was an important collection and "not just gold for the sake of it being gold".

"This isn't just some ring or ear-ring, these are objects that men made more than five centuries ago to worship their gods and superiors," she added.
