Bissett mine pours first gold in nearly a decadeFriday, 25th August 2006 (2365 views) The Bissett mine in Manitoba, Canada, has emerged from the mining wilderness, nearly ten years after it last poured gold, CBC Canada reports.Found just over 150 miles north of the city of Winnipeg, the gold prospect was successfully operated for over 35 years before it closed in 1968. Despite being reopened briefly on three occasions since then, in 1980, 1996, and 1998, the economic environment surrounding gold was never strong enough to maintain profitable production. However, it seems now that the San Gold Corporation, which runs the site (now known as Rice Lake) is intent on giving the area a longer stint at mining the deposit. The company has also hinted at its intention to develop another mine nearby, which one of the company's founders, Hugh Wynne, says could turn into a profitable venture producing millions of ounces of gold. "It's been a very exciting time, after working so long and so hard on this project to finally see an end result that's exceptionally good for the area and for the province of Manitoba," he said.
