An ancient masterpiece of calligraphy dating back nearly two millennia has been reproduced in almost pure gold, CCTV International reports.

Wang Xizhi's most famous work, "Lanting Xu", has been completed after nearly three years of painstaking exertion, recreating the original which was produced in 353 AD.

The paper is seven metres long and made of 99.9 per cent gold, the equivalent of the metal in its purest (24-carat) form.

It is an exact replica of the original piece found in the Forbidden City - the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties of ancient China - despite the original work being a product of the Eastern Jin dynasty.

The replica of this cultural enigma of written work is to be held by the National Library of the Asian country in Beijing's Capital Library building.
