Gold mining has been captured as an important field of work in a new book of photographs by award-winning author Ferdinand Protzman.

His book, entitled 'Work: The World in Photographs', was published on August 29th by National Geographic Books. In a series of pictures, it celebrates the countless different ways in which people across the world make a living.

One section depicts those workers that Protzman considers 'Collectors', AP reports. They include miners of gold, platinum and coal, as well as wool-harvesters in Australia and flower-cultivators in California.

Other sections cover work in antiquity (where we find a picture of an Egyptian woman making dough to be baked on a flat stone) and sellers (which includes a man selling religious items in Jerusalem).

"Work is a subject that is both worldwide and personal," said Protzman. "It is a shared endeavour at the very core of our identity. From the glamour of a Parisian fashion show to the grit of an African diamond mine, there are countless ways to make a living."
