Philippines minister calls for social license in miningThursday, 21st September 2006 (2836 views) Philippines government spokesman Angelo Reyes has affirmed that social considerations are imperative when it comes to mining in the 21st century, the Manila Standard reports.Speaking at a mining conference last week, Mr Reyes said: "While the issues and concerns may not be similar, the reality is that modern mining, wherever it is located, must come to terms with the views and desires of the stakeholders. "It is all about getting that 'social license' to operate. It's all about democracy." Angelo Reyes is the secretary of the country's department of environment and natural resources. The Philippines has significant deposits of gold, silver, nickel and copper. Its mining sector was recently praised by visiting African executives for its good social governance. Tanzania's deputy minister for energy and minerals, Laurence Kego Masha, said that he would take lessons back to his country from the Philippines about corporate social responsibility and interactions with locals.
