Friday, 22nd September 2006 (3764 views) Two gold projects are among a new wave of mines that are set to bring economic prosperity to the Nunavut region of Canada, Nunatsiaq News reports. The newspaper claims that over the coming decade, mining projects in the region "promise to deliver many hundreds of millions [of dollars] in new investment, along with hundreds of jobs and scores of business opportunities for those who are ready". Among the most promising are Cumberland Resources' Meadowbank project and Miramar Mining's Doris North gold mine. The former is awaiting the green light from the federal minister of Indian and northern affairs, after which it could begin operating by 2008. It could employ around 350 people, half of whom could be Inuit. The latter will see over five million ounces of gold extracted over two years. Miramar has signed an impact benefit agreement that ensures the local Kitikmeot Inuit people will have business opportunities made available to them.
