Europe triumphs in Ryder CupThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Monday, 25th September 2006 (3172 views) For the third time in a row, Europe has emerged victorious from the biennial Ryder Cup golf tournament. The prestigious event is one of the highest-profile trophies in the sport, pitting the wits of a group of 12 European golfers against their American counterparts in pursuit of the famous 17-inch high gold trophy. In this year's event, the European team handed the Americans a resounding defeat, winning 18 ½ points to 9 ½ - the same score as two years ago. Sweden's Henrik Stenson officially holed the winning putt on the 15th green at the K Club in Ireland as his Ryder Cup team-mates celebrated retaining the trophy. Despite Stenson being the man who officially won the cup, the biggest cheer was reserved for home favourite Darren Clarke. The Irishman was cheered as he celebrated the win by downing a pint of Guinness on the balcony. Clarke's three wins over the course of the weekend were particularly poignant as he lost wife Heather to breast cancer last month and was only included as one of European captain Ian Woosnam's wild card picks at the last minute.
