Nelson to receive Congressional Gold MedalThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Thursday, 28th September 2006 (3327 views) The US Senate has approved a bill to honour deceased professional golf legend Ryan Nelson with the Congressional Gold Medal. The award will be made to Nelson posthumously, provided President Bush signs the act, as he is expected. The House of Representatives originally voted to award the medal to Nelson back in May. "It is entirely fitting that as we mourn the passing of Byron Nelson this week, we honour his life and tremendous service to his fellow Americans with the passage of this legislation today," said Senator John Cornyn, a Texas Republican who sponsored the bill. "The Congressional Gold Medal is given to individuals who exemplify the American spirit by serving their community and helping those less fortunate, which is what Byron Nelson devoted his life to doing." Nelson died earlier this week at his home in Roanoke, Texas and his funeral will be held this Friday (September 29th) in Irving. He was a renowned philanthropist as well as a respected golfer and won 52 tournaments throughout his career.
