South Africa 'still being explored for new gold'

Friday, 20th October 2006 (2438 views)

Simmer & Jack, the South African gold company started in the 1880s, has announced it has been granted three licenses which span an area of 22 farms.

The licenses cover the Pilgrims Rest and Sabie gold fields which are both within Simmer's Transvaal Gold Mine Estates and permit the company to carry out prospections.

These lands, in Mpumalanga, yielded approximately six million of ounces of gold previously but declined in popularity after the First World War. They have been mined for over 130 years.

Gordon Miller, chief executive of Simmer, said: "We know the area does have gold and are very confident it is highly prospective and that we'll make new discoveries."

He said the firm will take advantage of new technologies such as heap leach processing and sampling techniques in order to explore the areas.

Simmer wants to challenge the commonly held perception that South Africa's gold provinces do not hold the potential for new gold discoveries, explained Mr Miller.

New grassroots exploration programmes are part of proving this is the case.
