Thousands of gold coins dating from the Kakatiya dynasty are to be put on display at the Andhra Pradesh State Museum in Hyderabadis, India.

The numismatic gallery will be funded by the government of India and the state government and will house some 16,000 gold ashrafis.

A time frame of a year and a half has been proposed for the opening of the new exhibition and bullet-proof display cases have been commissioned by the museum to secure the coin collection.

Dr J Kedareshwari, director of archaeology and museums at the Andhra Pradesh State Museum, stated: "The numismatic gallery will tell the story of money from the barter system to the ATM."

The collection will include punch mark coins from the Satavahana dynasty, as well as coins from other dynasties and countries including Roman, Ikshvaku, Asif Jahi, East India Company, British and modern Indian.

Two other Indian museums currently have coin collections with the National Museum of India in Delhi housing 1672 coins dating back to the 6th century BC and the Reserve Bank of India in Mumbai.
