High River Gold Mines has begun a $10 million (£5.2 million) drilling programme at its Bissa Group Permits in Burkina Faso, the mining company has announced.

A total of $2 million (£1 million) is to be spent on drill work per quarter according to High River Gold Mines and the target has been identified as increasing the gold resource at the site.

Gold resources at the Bissa site are an indicated total of 662,250 ounces as well as an inferred total of 679,470 ounces and the mining company wishes to raise this to a total resource of at least two million ounces.

As well as focusing on the Bissa resource area, drilling work is also set to take place outside this zone and infill drilling is already underway at the site, conducted by two drill rigs.

Highlights of previous assay results include 59.19 grams per tonne over 9.1 metres, 35.19 grams per tonne over a length of 14 metres and also 39.38 grams of gold per tonne which was found over ten metres.

High River Gold has its headquarters in Toronto, Canada and is currently exploring and developing properties in Russia as well as west Africa.
