Gold Fields expansion gets go ahead

Tuesday, 28th November 2006 (2427 views)

South African mining company Gold Fields has been granted permission to expand two projects at its Ghanaian Tarkwa mine.

The two projects are expected to cost $175 million (£90 million) and will enable the mine to maintain current output levels of 700,000 ounces per year until 2021.

One expansion plan involves expanding the capacity of the current onsite carbon-in-leach processing plant from 4.2 million tonnes per year to around 12 million. The second project will help add a further heap leach pad to Tarkwa's north heap leach facility.

Terence Goodlace, head of international operations for Gold Fields, said "Gold Fields remains committed to Ghana and these exciting and robust projects will leverage returns for Tarkwa and take advantage of increases in the gold price."

He added: "They will contribute to increasing future gold production and ultimately result in an additional one million ounces of recovered gold over the life of the mine. Total recovered gold for the mine is now 11.7 million ounces."

Work on both projects is expected to commence during the first three months of next year and will be completed during the last six months of 2008.
