A man-woman duo have allegedly hypnotised a 65-year-old woman into parting with her gold jewellery in Sector 10 market, Panchkula, India.

The victim reported being approached by a "very handsome" man as well as a "well-dressed" woman in the market and was asked for directions. Later, they returned to her and she recalls handing over jewellery though she claims she had no control over actions.

After being asked to remove her jewellery and place it in a handkerchief, the woman, named Vidyawati, said that she had no recollection of what occurred next.

She explained to Express India what happened: "They hypnotised me and I was doing what they were telling me to do. Then the woman took off my jewellery and they walked away from me with the jewellery."

Vidyawati claims to have been robbed of two gold rings, one diamond ring, a gold chain and four gold bangles which had a collective value of Rs one lakh (£1,140).

Following Vidyawati's ordeal at the hands of the criminal combo, she contacted a local journalist and the superintendent of the local police force and they lodged a report of cheating and criminal conspiracy against the thieves.

Hindus believe that gold is the gift of the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, underlining its importance in India.
