Gold Explorer of the Year announcedFriday, 15th December 2006 (2309 views) AngloGold and Independence have managed to tie for the accolade of Gold Explorer of the Year 2006 as awarded by the Gold Mining Journal. The journal is Australia's only mining magazine and the two companies were chosen for their work in the development of the Tropicana project which is located in Western Australia. Barry Avery, the journal's editor, said: "AngloGold Ashanti and Independence are deserved winners as their progress at Tropicana, about 400 kilometres northeast of Kalgoorlie, is helping this region shape up as an entirely new exploration province within the Yilgarn Block." Tropicana covers 12,000 sq km and is expected to reap multi million ounce gold deposits although results from exploration work have not been released. Gold Miner of the Year went to Dominion Mining, for the second year running, for increasing production at the Challenger Gold Mine in South Australia while keeping within budget. AngloGold owns 70 per cent of Tropicana while Independence owns 30 per cent and they entered into this joint venture in 2002.
