Canadian-based Sherwood Copper has confirmed that construction of its Minto copper-gold mining project is nearly 50 per cent complete.

The company announced that its plans are on track with waste prestripping for the site over 60 per cent completed and the mine should enter production during the second quarter of next year – early then previously expected.

Work on the site has increased significantly in recent weeks with the introduction of the SAG and ball mills as well as water tanks, flotation cells and a variety of other equipment needed in the mill plant. It is expected that the next stage to be completed will include the concentrate storage shed and water retention dam.

"Development of a high grade, open pit, copper-gold mine at Minto continues to advance at a rapid rate," said Stephen Quin, president and chief executive office of Sherwood Copper.

He added: "We are very pleased with the progress being made by our construction managers… for not only maintaining but actually accelerating our development schedule while keeping costs controlled. We anticipate production commencing during the second quarter of 2007, well ahead of the forecast third quarter 2007 set out in the feasibility study."
