Solomon Gold's ongoing exploration work at Sutakiki - situated on the Island of Guadalcanal - has returned "highly encouraging" results, according to the mining company.

The copper gold discovery site at Sutakiki was found to have yielded 0.79 grams per tonne of gold between depths of 305 metres and 452 metres.

With a total of 22 different targets identified at the site, Solomon Gold also discovered high grades of gold at 12.2 grams per tonne over 445 metres to 447 metres.

Located in the Pacific rim of fire region which discoveries have shown contains over 40 million ounces of gold equivalent, Sutakiki has seen gold sluicing just north of it near the Gold Ridge mine in previous years.

Directors at Solomon Gold have expressed their belief that the Guadalcanal geology points to the possible hosting of ore bodies similar to Grasberg in Irian Jaya, Ok Tedi and Frieda River which are all in Papua New Guinea.

During 2001, the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission stated that the "Solomon Islands [is] perhaps the most prospective of the Pacific island nations for minerals after Papua New Guinea".
