An operation in Zimbabwe designed to clamp down on illegal gold mining has resulted in the arrest of Michael George Hughes at Tebeke mine as well as Gabriel Gadrielgqweu.

The men were brought into police custody amid allegations they had been mining without a licence and it has been reported in the Herald newspaper in Harare that due to the focus on stamping out illegal operations, Fidelity Printers and Refiners is consequently witnessing increased inflows.

So far, the operation has returned around 26.8 kilograms of gold and has discovered nearly 25,000 illegal miners working in Zimbabwe.

Speaking about the current police operation, chief superintendent Oliver Mandipaka stated that he would not abide by illegal activity from his police officers amid reports that some officers may have been plundering some of the ore finds.

He told the Herald: "I would like our police officers to know that anyone of them who do things outside the law will face the full wrath of the law."
