Gold fossickers have been left praising the heavens after they proceeded to open and let out a mighty downpour in Tibooburra, New South Wales, raising the prospect of the odd gold find or two in the small town.

It was reported on Australia's ABC website that a year's worth of rainfall came down in just 24 hours, resulting in the gold-rich area becoming a prime spot to strike gold.

Local fossicker Barney Davey told ABC that he had heard reports of some people pocketing up to 20 pieces of gold following the downpour.

After 114 millimetres fell last week, Mr Davey said that he found "a nice little flake of gold" near to his house while caught up in the adverse weather conditions in the town.

With a signposted population of just 150, Tibooburra is located some 340 kilometres away from Broken Hill, formed part of the Albert Goldfields and was established during a gold rush in the area in the 19th century.
