Gold chopsticks to celebrate New Year

Friday, 23rd February 2007 (4375 views)

Gold is always being used in luxurious items such as jewellery and more frequently to decorate mobile phones, but the latest incarnation of the precious metal was made to celebrate Chinese New Year.

In the Singaporean province of Geylang Serai, ten sponsors of an event to celebrate the new lunar year each purchased a pair of specially made golden chopsticks with the money being put to good use.

The Geylang Serai Bursary and Welfare Fund benefited from the ten donations of S$1,288 (£428) which the authorities hope will help to raise community spirit as well as funds for the less-privileged.

It is the Year of the Golden Pig according to the Chinese calendar and it is a very special year because it only happens once every 60 years and the year represents the commendable traits of fortitude, honesty and loyalty.

China is bracing itself for somewhat of a baby boom because many couples have planned to have a baby during the prolific year – hoping that it has the lucky characteristics of being polite, honest, hardworking and loyal and will thus lead a comfortable and wealthy life.
