Mauritania opens first gold mine

Friday, 23rd February 2007 (2785 views)

The north-west African country of Mauritania has officially opened it first copper and gold mine by its president, Ely Ould Mohamed Vall.

With production having already commenced at the Guelb Moghrein site last October, gold production rates have already doubled from the 2,800 ounces mined per month in the initial stages, reports afrol news.

It is estimated that, with Mauritania's national economy believed to depend to a large extent upon its mining resources, the currently buoyant gold market will rapidly offset investments.

The decision to first mine gold from Guelb Moghrein, 250 km north-east of capital city Nouakchott, was finalised in July 2004, with the development set to increase employment opportunities in the region.

Iron, titanium and oil production also figure heavily in the Mauritanian mining industry.
