A decision to stop for a quick bite to eat had severe consequences for a jewellery salesman in the US.

Chris Wong, a 43-year-old salesman from Hong Kong parked his car near a McDonalds in Naples in order to purchase some food and returned to discover $150,000 (£75,000) worth of gold jewellery had been stolen.

Naples News reports that while waiting in line for his food, an unidentified man asked who the owner of a silver Mitsubishi was - because the passenger window had been broken.

"They're assuming when you go into a restaurant, even if you're just getting your food to go, you might be in there a good five minutes, even longer," Kristin Adams, spokeswoman for the Collier County Sheriff's Office told the newspaper.

She added: "It only takes a couple seconds to smash a window and take property from a car."

Mr Wong discovered that about 400 pieces of jewellery - including yellow gold and diamonds - had been taken, in addition to his passport and laptop computer.
