A 24-carat gold-plated dress has been stolen from a car in Melbourne, Australia, it has been reported.

The dress was stolen this earlier this week as was due to leave the country for China, where model Amy Sutton was to wear it in a bid to become Miss Tourism.

Weighing eight kilogrammes, the gold dress is worth $500,000 (£250,000) and took designer Grant Cassebohm, of Taperoo, four years to make.

"I'm a little bit shell-shocked at the moment. Hopefully, someone will realise it's not worth anything to them so I can take it to China," the dress's promoter Wayne Deller told the Daily Telegraph.

The gold dress can be broken up into pieces to be transported and only the main bodice was stolen in the incident.

In related news, a white jersey Gucci gown designed by Tom Ford and once owned by Houston socialite Becca Cason-Thrash, which features a gold-plated thong, has sold for $3,800, e-online reports.
