Those with a sweet tooth and a deep pocket might want to cast their eye toward a list compiled by Forbes Traveller magazine, detailing the world's top ten most expensive desserts.

Items featured on the list include the golden plum souffle, served at the Waterside Inn in Bray, Berkshire.

The holder of the Guinness World Record for the most expensive sundae also features on the list in the form of a Tahitian vanilla bean ice coated in 23-carat edible gold leaf, which "leaves a ring of gold dust around people's mouths," according to Serendipity spokesman Joe Calderone

The dessert also features gold-plated dragets and truffles and is eaten with an 18-carat gold spoon.

In Istanbul dessert lovers can enjoy the Sultan's Golden Cake, "an edible brick of gold" covered in 24-carat gold leaf.

However top of the list came a dessert entitled the Fortress Aquamarine, served in Galle, Sri Lanka and featuring an 80-carat aquamarine priced at $14,500 (£7,250).
