Wednesday, 26th September 2007 (4313 views) Municipal councillors in the Indian city of Chandigarh are currently debating whether the mayor should be provided with a gold necklace, dubbed the Necklace of Authority, according to Expressindia.com.The proposal for the gold necklace which would be studded with the municipal logo and would contain 35 beads or jewels to represent the 35 councillors was put on the agenda by six councillors, who feel that a Necklace of Authority will enhance the image of the institution of mayor in the city. The site reported that if the proposal is accepted, the mayor will wear the necklace at sports events, on national days, at ceremonial occasions and during government proceedings and will hand it to the next mayoral successor in a ceremony at the Municipal Corporation House. According to the news site, councillors argue that gold Necklaces of Authority are a common tradition across municipalities in India and that councillors should also wear badges to identify themselves in public. Chandigarh is located within the Himalayan ecosystem and, at last count, had a total population of 900,635.
