New funding for gold nanotechnology research project

Friday, 28th September 2007 (3296 views)

American medical technology firm Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) has signed an agreement to fund a new follow-on research program to further explore a technology based on gold nanoparticles, Thomson Financial has reported.

The Nanoplex technology, developed by international nanomaterials group Oxonica, is based on a series of silica-coated gold nanoparticles, which act as biomarkers in a variety of biological matrices, including whole blood.

Uniform in size, each Nanoplex biotag has a gold core surrounded by a reporter molecule.

Applications of the technology include food testing, aiding with cancer and cardiac diagnoses and the treatment of infectious diseases in humans and animals.

BD is currently focused on improving the diagnosis of diseases, developing new drug therapies and aiding in the further discovery of new drugs.

The company's research and technology developments are used by clinical laboratories, doctors and hospitals, life science researchers and the general public.

It operates under three divisions – medical, diagnostics and biosciences.
