A ten-foot-high mural celebrating the 400-year-old tradition of gold mining in North Carolina will be used to promote the Gold Bazaar, a proposed gold-themed shopping centre in Charlotte, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Developer Pete Verna told the newspaper that the 62-foot-long mural will be part of a 10-storey carpark and shopping centre, the design of which will honour the state's rich tradition of gold mining.

"The mural will go up in what looks like a tunnel to a gold mine," he said.

He added that he is currently planning to obtain dirt from the creek at the nearby Reed gold mine to be part of a man-made creek near the entrance of the centre, where customers can pan for gold.

Mr Verna said that he hopes that the car parking deck will be in operation by early 2009, with the Gold Bazaar to open shortly after.

Painted by Kenneth Whitsett, the 40-year-old mural has previously been displayed in a school cafeteria and stored in closets during the search for a new owner.

According to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the artist also created murals for both the Orange County Historical Museum and the Charlotte City Club.
