Tuesday, 30th October 2007 (2956 views)

A new exhibit at the Damascus National Museum in Syria, featuring 35 items of gold jewellery, has been opened to the public.

The exhibit, entitled Sea of Jewellery, contains pieces from Syria and Italy that date back as far as the Roman empire, including 13 ancient gold items from the second and third millennia BC.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, the exhibit was jointly organised by the Italian Cultural Centre, the National Museum for Ruins in Napoli and the Archaeology and Museums General Directorate, among others.

It also contains a collection of 11 pieces of gold jewellery representing the Islamic era, as well as a more recent group of jewellery items from the 18th and 19th centuries.

In addition to the Sea of Jewellery exhibit, visitors to the National Museum in Damascus can also find jewellery and coins in the section devoted to classical antiquities, according to syriamuseum.com.
