A new mountain bike challenge, to be held next year, has been created with a gold-themed twist, according to organisers.

The Mawddach Rotary club, based in southern Snowdonia, is planning for the Mawddach Gold Rush challenge, a one-day event set to take place in March 2008.

Solo cyclists participating in the competition will travel approximately 50 kilometres as they complete three laps of a racecourse located on a historical trail in the Welsh gold mining region.

Each rider will also have the chance to pick a plot of land on the Mawddach gold property, one of which will contain a "mystery bounty", according to the event's website.

Cyclists participating in the event, which is also open to relay teams, will be helping to raise money for several charitable organisations, including the air ambulance service and the Institute for Cancer Research.

According to Welsh Gold, there has been known existence of the precious metal in the area since 1198, when monks at Cymer Abbey in Llanelltyd recorded the right to extract gold from the region.
