A US company that pioneered the use of gold as an automotive catalyst has been recognised for its work in the field of nanotechnology.

Nanostellar was named a 2008 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum, which is comprised of experts from academia, the media, venture capital and corporate technology.

Through its work, Nanostellar has addressed the threats posed to the environment by vehicle pollution - an endeavour that achieved a major breakthrough in June 2007, when the company developed a method of using gold as an automotive catalyst.

By using gold as well as the traditional metals used for emissions reduction, platinum and palladium, Nanostellar enabled a 20 per cent reduction in noxious emissions at a lower cost.

"From a highly competitive field, we are extremely pleased to have a community that is using innovation and technology to dramatically affect the way society and business operate and doing so in a markedly collaborative manner," said Peter Torreele, managing director of the World Economic Forum.

Nanostellar states that it is committed to the delivery of revolutionary materials to further pollution-control efforts.
