A pharmaceutical museum in Cuba has received the National Landmark award, with its gold and porcelain foundation cup highlighted as one of the museum's key artefacts.

It is placed next to an effigy of the Virgin Mary and welcomes visitors to the Triolet Pharmaceutical Museum.

The museum received the Cuban National Landmark award in recognition of its originality, preservation and 125-year history.

Over 100 years ago, the colonial-designed building housed a pharmacy in the city of Matanzas, 100km east of Havana.

However, in 1964 it was turned into a pharmaceutical museum, displaying medicinal formulas and furniture made out of the rare Cuban woods and unique porcelain.

As well as the gold and porcelain cup, the museum also boasts the Apothecary Eyes - an ornament made out of bohemian glass and filled with red and yellow-coloured water.

The museum also displays a collection of thousands of labels, as well as utensils, bottles, devices, formulas, with most of them perfectly intact despite their age.
