Sustainable jewellery pledge at meeting

Tuesday, 18th December 2007 (2743 views)

A recent meeting saw members of the gold jewellery industry make a commitment to sustainability in the sector, it has been reported.

Members of CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation, met in Geneva last month to discuss how the sector could increase its performance in the field of sustainability.

"There is evidence that shows the jewellery luxury consumer can provide the economic support on one end of the channel of distribution so that the other end, the businesses and employees in the producing and developing nations, can benefit," commented Michael R Haynes, chief executive officer of Collectors Universe.

New York's Gem Certification and Assurance Lab pledged $50,000 to CIBJO at the meeting.

The UN's Economic and Social Council was reported to have supported the endeavour, which was held under the auspices of the UN Development programme.

CIBJO states its purpose as encouraging harmony and cooperation within the jewellery industry.
