Gold ring found at Australia's oldest colonial jail

Friday, 21st December 2007 (1992 views)

A gold ring has been recovered in Australia's oldest colonial jail following an extensive conservation programme.

The eight-month regeneration project on Richmond Jail in southern Tasmania was intended to improve drainage to preserve the sandstone buildings but the state government also commissioned an excavation of the jail courtyard.

And the excavation did not disappoint with archaeologist Jody Steele telling ABC News that a number of interesting artefacts were found during the work.

She confirmed that the discovered gold ring had a belt buckle on it and will now make up part of a display at the prison.

Ms Steele added:" We found a toothbrush handle which was made by GB Kent in London and they actually made toothbrushes for the Queen at the time".

Over in the US, a Wichita citizen, who lost her treasured gold ring in 1983, has now been reunited with the Wichita Falls High senior ring almost 25 years later.
